The fit is modern, with slightly pre-curved arms — what Icon 1000 refers to as their sport fit: mobility without the bulk. There’s definitely room for adding another layer or two without restricting movement. The hood can be cinched down and the pulls neatly tuck away to keep them from flapping in the wind. Zippered front pockets keep your carry organized and secure while a sport cuff thumb loop holds the sleeves where they need to be.
Protection comes from D3O impact protectors on the shoulders elbows and back — all removable should you just need the jacket for a quick walk to the pub. Though you’ll probably want to leave them in place. D3O’s low profile, flexible armor is such that you’ll hardly notice they’re there. And extra protection on your motorcycle is never a bad idea.
In time for the Northern Hemisphere’s spring comes the Icon 1000 Varial motorcycle jacket (which will do quite nicely for the Southern Hemisphere’s fall as well). Starting with a coated nylon base, Icon added leather panels and a water-repellent zipper, resulting in defense against light rain and snow. When the day heats up, the zippered chest and back ventilation brings on maximum airflow to keep you cool.
