This is the Saint Engineered Classic Riding Jacket. Developed by Melbourne-based riding gear experts Saint, the Engineered Classic Jacket represents an evolution of their best-selling jacket that adds class AA-certified protection to the offering.
Saint has been producing streetwear-styled riding gear since they first came on the scene. I have been lucky enough to own many items from their range and regularly wear their jeans both on and off my motorcycle thanks to their great look and comfort. The Engineered Classic Jacket epitomizes this approach with its timeless styling and comfort-focused design.
The trucker-styled Engineered Classic Jacket jacket is an ideal counterpart for summer riding. Built from soft denim it wears more comfortably off the shelf than your average stiff denim and has a snug but relaxed fit. Although the jacket lacks dedicated ventilation the denim breathes well and the wrists offer 2 points of adjustment so you can allow cool air in. The main closure also lets plenty of air in while you’re on the go so any heat build-up is quickly dispelled.
As with most of Saint’s range, branding has been kept to a minimum with only a single embroidered SA1NT patch on the right chest pocket and their unmistakable winged emblem appearing on the left chest pocket, embroidered on the lower back and embossed onto the jacket’s press studs.
Saint has finished the exterior of the Engineered Classic Jacket with contrasting orange stitching, 2 chest pockets that secure with press studs, and 2 non-closing waist pockets. Always conscious of rider’s needs, Saint has rubberized the black press studs on the chest, wrist, and waist of the jacket. This is great for OCD riders like me who want to avoid the chance of their motorcycle’s paint being scratched. The rubber coating also makes the studs glove-friendly so opening any of them on the go can be done with ease.
On the inside, this jacket boasts 2 wide pockets for additional storage that are finished in Saint’s go-to hi-vis orange colorway. To keep things cool on hot summer days the jacket’s chest, back, and sleeves are lined with a moisture-wicking mesh.
Beyond everything, it’s the look of this denim jacket that is its main selling point for me. The Engineered Classic Jacket can easily hold its own alongside a Levi’s trucker during a night out on the town. The only giveaway that this jacket isn’t simply streetwear is the cut. The longer cut sits a few inches below waist height and drops at the rear. This is essential for keeping your lower back covered while in a riding position but it doesn’t detract from the overall look.
Saint has labeled this jacket as an entry-level riding garment which is reflected by their choice of materials. Although many of Saint’s products utilize Dyneema-infused denim the Engineered Classic Jacket relies on armour for its AA safety certification. Included in the USD $274 price tag is removable, low profile shoulder and elbow armor and the back features a pocket that can accept optional D3O Viper Back Armor. Behind the main closure is a sturdy zipper to prevent the jacket from opening in the event of an accident. Additionally, Saint has reinforced high-impact zones to minimize the risk of bursting and reduce the risk of abrasion injury.
