Boxermeister: The Jägermeister Group 5 M1 inspired R9T by Zweiradwerke

Zweiradwerke is a BMW Motorrad authorized dealership and moto cafe in the Bavarian city of Rosenheim. Their headquarters offers a wide range of motorcycle services including sales, storage, and customization, and even caters to local riders’ caffeine requirements with their in-house cafe. Their latest custom creation built on the foundation of a BMW R nineT, the Boxermeister, is a tribute to the legendary Walter Brun racing team Jägermeister-liveried Group 5 BMW M1 prototype.

The BMW R nineT needs no introduction in the world of motorcycle customization. Introduced in 2014, it was designed to honor the heritage of BMW’s boxer engine and to offer enthusiasts the ultimate canvas for customization. The team at Zweiradwerke are no strangers to modifying the R nineT platform. This time around they’ve drawn inspiration from the roaring 1970s racing scene in the form of this Jagermeister M1-inspired custom.

The 1978 BMW M1 was developed with the sole intention of beating Porsche at the racetrack. The mid-engined sports car featured a lightweight fiberglass body, a specially designed frame, and a powerful 6-cylinder engine. It was the first production model to be developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH. Only 453 M1s were produced to meet Group-5 racing requirements which stipulated at least 400 units of any car entered should be manufactured for street use. Of the 453 built, BMW set aside 53 specifically for racing.

Unlike the original, the Brun Racing example was powered by an M88 turbo straight-6 DOHC petrol engine tuned to produce a whopping 1000bhp. Unfortunately, despite its obvious potential, it was never raced. Forty years on BMW collector and mechanic Fritz Wagner built his own Brun M1 and finished it Jagermeister livery to match Brun’s Group C World Championship-winning Porsche 956. The cars look and impressive performance made it an instant hit with BMW fans worldwide.

Similar to the Brun racing M1, every detail of Zweiradwerke’s Boxermeister has been meticulously planned and executed. Take for instance the bike’s AC Schnitzer lightweight forged wheels anodized in gold, a purposeful nod to the racing world. Wrapped in Metzeler Racetec RR rubber they offer enough grip for the bike to be ridden hard with confidence.

The bikini fairing, tail unit, and seat, handcrafted by Zweiradwerke’s resident artisans, form the R nineT’s unique silhouette. A carbon front fender, produced by Ilmberger, sits between a specially tuned set of Ohlins forks. The Jekill and Hyde exhaust system unleashes more of the 1,170cc Boxer twin’s power and features 3 electronically controlled sound modes to suit your mood or location. The Boxermeister’s handling has been further enhanced in the rear using more equipment from Ohlins.

To complete this R nineT’s new look the engine wears cast BMW 2V styled cylinder head covers. Genuine BMW Option 719 footrests further enhance the bike’s sporty demeanor and they’ve been paired with AC-Schnitzer clip-on handlebars. Last, but certainly not least, the R nineT has been treated to livery inspired directly by the Jagermeister BMW M1. Finished in vibrant orange and sporting Boxermeister branding and tongue-in-cheek boxing rabbit decals, it’s bound to leave a lasting impression everywhere it goes.

From start to finish this bike took the Zweiradwerke team around 90 hours to complete. The Boxermeister is a fusion of classic style and modern technology, embodying the philosophy of “Classic meets modern” that Zweiradwerke strives to achieve with each of their custom projects. Boxermeister is currently for sale for €29,990 and can be viewed at the Zweiradwerke showroom.
