Smooth & Delicate: Tamarit Thruxton ‘Black Dragon’

Spanish workshop Tamarit Motorcycles has added yet another thoroughbred to their 170-strong stable, the ‘Black Dragon’. This heavily redesigned Triumph Thruxton 900 is a commissioned project for an American ex-pat living in Scotland. Inspired by the motorcycle’s future home, Tamarit’s designers envisaged a bike with characteristics akin to Scotch whisky, smooth and delicate, and distinct character.

Triumph created the Thruxton 900 to capture the nostalgia of a golden age of speed and style. Powered by an air and oil-cooled carbureted parallel twin, the Thurxton 900 powerplant represents the end of an era in Triumph’s manufacturing history. That engine’s distinctive character and sound offered the perfect starting point for this project. This build also ushers in a new sector of Tamarit Signature Classic motorcycles which aim to blend classic aesthetics with advanced electronics and premium componentry.

“This is scotch whisky, smooth and delicate with a warm serve of timeless elegance. A hat tip to the heritage of the country where the Black Dragon, now resides.” – Tamarit Motorcycles

Tamarit approaches each of its projects as a unique work of art. Colors are meticulously selected after extensive consultations and clients continue receiving regular updates as their project evolves. For the Black Dragon, Tamarit says the deep black symbolizes a passion for speed, while the silver exudes the elegance of classic motorcycles, and the gold embodies the motorcycle’s luxurious finish.

The Black Dragon’s length has been increased by 15 cm thanks to the fitment of an extended swingarm and all-new monoshock rear suspension system, a feature that’s become synonymous with Tamarit motorcycles. The rear monoshock, with its floating solo seat forms part of this bike’s unique silhouette. The original fuel tank is bookended by the Tamarit monoshock rear end and a custom-made half-fairing for a look that combines timeless visual elements of cafe racer and bobber styling.

To ensure the best safety and performance of their work, the Black Dragoin’s chassis has additional reinforcement. At great expense, Tamarit has these modifications tested and certified in the lab to ensure their projects meet strict European homologation requirements, and this motorcycle was no exception.

As is customary, the factory electronics of the Black Dragon have been extensively upgraded. This Thurxton now features top-notch components from the Motogadget catalog including a Motoscope mini digital speedometer that’s integrated into the triple clamp. A mo-Unit Blue Digital Controller functions as the brain of the electrical system offering remote tunability via the Motogadget app. And bar end mo-blaze turn signals help keep things looking clean. Rear-end lighting is taken care of by Tamarit’s own twin taillight, dual-function LED lights. These have also been built into the seat base and there’s a premium adaptive LED headlight taking pride of place out front.

The Black Dragon’s handcrafted exhaust system is a marvel of engineering. The 2-into-2 system was formed using pie-cut sections of stainless steel. A pair of new carburetors sporting velocity stacks optimizes air intake and improves the power of the engine at low RPMs. Tamarit has also leveraged the hollow tubes of the Thruxton frame by incorporating a unique cooling system into them. By circulating oil through the frame rather than of a radiator they’ve reduced clutter and added a unique visual element with the addition of cooling fins to the frame cradle.

Straight out of the Tamarit Triumph parts catalog the Black Dragon wears a chromed ‘Hummer’ sump guard, a ‘no-limits’ front fender, and ‘Pantera’ shock springs which recreate the vintage look of externally sprung forks. The rear fender, a bespoke piece made from fiberglass with a brass-machined aluminum bracket, complements the bike’s gold chain.

The Thruxton tank, now finished in a deep gloss black, is adorned with a large chrome teardrop divided by gold leaf pinstripes that set the tone for this motorcycle’s lavish color scheme. Along with the slick paintwork, a veritable laundry list of the Thruxton’s metal components has undergone either a chrome, nickel, or brass plating process. This reportedly took the Tamarit team hundreds of hours of work to complete and the results speak for themselves.

The Black Dragon is yet another testament to Tamarit Motorcycles’ dedication to their craft. Merging classic style with modern technology they’ve created a rolling work of art, and like a good whisky, now all that’s left is for its owner to appreciate it.
